Once, a long time ago, 2009 tax returns were due on April 15, 2010.

If you’ve been putting off filing your 2009 taxes since that initial deadline, you may wonder why you should bother filing at all?

There are a couple of good reasons you should do it.

For one, the IRS has 10 years to collect on any tax you owe. For two, tax penalties for filing late increase by the day and, by now, they have really built up. The longer you wait, the worse the situation.

The good news is that you can still prepare your 2009 taxes online with PriorTax.

Will I Owe the IRS Late Penalties?

If you owe the IRS from the 2009 tax year, plan on paying late penalties. These late fees include:

  • Failure-to-file: 5% of your tax due total for each month your return is filed late, up to 25%
  • Failure-to-pay: ½ of 1% of your unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month left unpaid

The penalty for filing late can be ten times worse than the penalty for paying late. At the very least, file your 2009 return as soon as possible. Then, contact the IRS to arrange to pay your tax bill. They can set up an installment plan that will work for you.

Can I Still Collect a 2009 Refund?

Unfortunately, no. The last day to claim a 2009 refund was April 15, 2013. However, not being able to collect your refund money shouldn’t stop you from filing. On the other hand, you won’t face any late fees or penalties for filing late if you were due a refund!

Can I Prepare My 2009 Taxes Online Today?

Yes! To prepare your 2009 tax return, create an account on PriorTax and enter your 2009 tax information.

The bad news? The IRS shuts down the e-file system come mid-October of every tax season. The good news is, you can still file by paper-filing. That means you’ll be required to print, sign and mail your 2009 tax return once it’s prepared. No exceptions.

If you need help along the way, the PriorTax team is available by phone, chat or email support to answer any questions you may have.

Please advise how I can file my 2007 and 2008 taxes, all I have is a 1099 for both years. Do I file the same way as I would with a 1040 form?

      Hi James,

I’d be more than happy to assist you!

The first thing you should know if that you definitely can file both years with a 1099. This will assist you in reporting your income for both years. Next, You’ll want to create an account on Priortax.com and begin filling in your information. Remember to choose the correct tax year. My suggestion would be to start with 2007 and then move on to 2008. If you get stuck at any point, our tax experts are available via phone, live chat and email at no extra cost to you. Once you have entered in your information, you will submit your account and our experts will review and contact you if there are any issues. You can then print your return and mail it to the IRS. It’s pretty simple and won’t take you long at all to complete each year!
